Dr. Michelle Gibson obtained her medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1999, and then came to Queen’s University for Family Medicine and Care of the Elderly. She has worked in the Division of Geriatric Medicine since 2002, currently at the position of Assistant Professor.
Clinically, Dr. Gibson primarily has outpatient responsibilities, most often in the Geriatric Day Hospital, which provides outpatient multidisciplinary geriatric assessment and rehabilitation. In addition to the Day Hospital, Dr. Gibson shares responsibility for the Geriatric Inpatient unit at St. Mary’s of the Lake, in outpatient geriatric medicine clinics, and occasionally on consultations at KGH.
Dr. Gibson has a number of educational leadership roles. She is the Director of Year 1 in the Undergraduate Medical Education at Queen’s University. She coordinates the Facilitated Small Group Learning program (a type of problem-based learning) for the first two years of the curriculum. She is the current course director for the Geriatrics, Oncology and Palliative Care course in first year. Within Geriatric Medicine she is the Undergraduate and Resident Coordinator for Geriatric Medicine, coordinating rotations and teaching for medical students and residents from different programs. Finally, she is the current Program Coordinator for the Family Medicine Enhanced Skills program in Care of the Elderly.
Her research interests are in medical education. She completed her M.Ed. at Queen’s University in 2012 with a focus on assessment of medical students in clinical rotations. Her thesis work has been accepted for a poster at the Canadian Conference on Medical Education in April 2013. She also presented on the leadership curriculum that has been designed in the Care of the Elderly program at the International Conference on Residency Education in Ottawa in October, 2012.
