Dr. Ilan, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Queen’s University, practices Internal and Critical Care Medicine. He graduated from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, in Haifa, Israel, and trained in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at the Sheba Medical Center, Tel Aviv University, Israel. Dr. Ilan completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, University of Toronto, and he holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto.
Dr. Ilan serves as the patient safety officer for the Critical Care Program, and he chairs the Department of Medicine’s Quality Improvement Committee. He is a “Master Facilitator” for the Patient Safety Education Program, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, and serves as Faculty for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s ASPIRE (Advancing Safety for Patients in Residency Education). He is also a founding faculty member of the Master of Science in Healthcare Quality Program, Queen’s University.
Dr. Ilan’s research has focused on patient safety and quality improvement. In particular, he has described patterns of adherence to evidence-based practices in the ICU, and implemented system-based interventions to address relevant barriers. In addition, he studied the effectiveness of a complementary patient safety event reporting system in the ICU, as well as handoff communication patterns among critical care physicians.
