Thank you for this Stephen. We think about mitochondrial health in setting of HIV given that a backbone class of antivirals, the nucleoside analogs, inhibit DNA polymerase gamma (POLG) which is a mitochondrially transcribed (as opposed to most other polymerase which are transcribed from cytosolic genes). Genetic predisposition to the toxicity of nucleoside analogs (NRTI=nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor) have been described http://tools.niehs.nih.gov/polg/ It seems that there may also be an as of yet unappreciated genetic polymorphism of DNA POLG link to hypertension and cardiovascular events (Golob MJ, Tian L, Wang Z, Zimmerman TA, Caneba CA, Hacker TA, Song G, Chesler NC. Mitochondria DNA mutations cause sex-dependent development of hypertension and alterations in cardiovascular function. J Biomech. 2015 Feb 5;48(3):405-12. doi: 10.1016/j.jbiomech.2014.12.044. PubMed PMID: 25582357; PubMed Central PMCID: PMC4306604.). Once again, thanks for posting and for the food for thoughts. Regards Wendy
