Dr. Rasika Wijeratne joined the Department of Medicine in 2012 as a hospitalist after completing her residency training in Family Medicine at Queen’s University. Before coming to Canada she worked as the Medical Officer in Charge at Delvita rural hospital in Sri Lanka. She has received clinical training in Pediatric Cardiology as a post graduate student at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University in China and training in Pediatrics and General Surgery as an Intern at Chilaw General Hospital in Sri Lanka. She completed her Medical degree at the Medical School of Fudan University in China. 

Dr. Wijeratne provides clinical services as the Attending Physician in the Transitional Support Unit (TSU) at Kingston General Hospital. TSU receives Alternate Level of Care patients from Internal Medicine, Neurology and Cardiology inpatient services and provides continued care until they are discharged. With her exceptional multidisciplinary team she formulates care plans that reflect patients’ Goals of Care and optimizes patient transition from acute care hospital to appropriate discharge destination.

Her clinical interests are around Care of the Elderly, Frailty and management of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Her academic areas of interest are clinical skills, clinical ethics and Orientation of International Medical Graduates to Canadian Medical practice.
