Dr. Smith is a Professor of Medicine at Queen’s University and Head of the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) since 2013. He was appointed as Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine in 2020. He graduated from University College London in 1990 and completed post graduate clinical training in the UK and at the University of Illinois in Chicago, USA. He spent 10 years as an Attending Physician at Cook County Hospital in Chicago prior to being recruited to Queen’s in 2008. He was the program director of the core internal medicine training program from 2008-2015.

His clinical work is on the inpatient units at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and the GIM consult service and GIM ambulatory clinics including perioperative clinic. His interests are in medical education and he has held a number of administrative and educational positions at the University.
