Dr. Albert Jin MD, PhD, FRCPC

Dr. Al Jin is a Professor in the Division of Neurology and a specialist in cerebrovascular disease. Prior to embarking on a career in Medicine, Dr. Jin completed his doctorate in Chemistry at Queen’s University (1992-1998) under the supervision of Dr. Donald F. Weaver, focusing on the use of computational methods in anticonvulsant drug design. He completed undergraduate medical training at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario (1998-2001), residency training in Neurology at Queen's University (2001-2006), and a Cerebrovascular Disease fellowship (2006-2008) at the Calgary Stroke Program at The University of Calgary. He returned to Kingston, his hometown, in 2008 and continues to serve as an attending neurologist at Kingston Health Sciences Centre as well as a faculty member of the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University.

In addition to his clinical duties, he is the current Provincial Clinical Lead for Stroke with Ontario Health, supporting the development of stroke systems of care for ~40% of Canada’s population within the province of Ontario. He also continues to serve as the Medical Director for the Regional Stroke Network of Southeastern Ontario since 2012, providing guidance on equitable access to comprehensive stroke care across a region spanning 20,000 square kilometers. He is proud to be a part of a highly experienced, interdisciplinary, and nationally recognized Stroke Service that has led the province as the fastest treating team for acute ischemic stroke thrombolysis for several years. Some of the medical leadership activities that Dr. Jin has been privileged to participate in include:

Development of a high-performing endovascular thrombectomy program in Kingston General Hospital that has one of the highest access rates for care within Ontario;
Medical Director of the Stroke Prevention Clinic at Kingston Health Sciences Centre;
Medical Director of the Stroke Prevention Clinic at Brockville General Hospital;
Kingston Health Sciences Centre Physician Lead for the Accreditation Canada/Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Stroke Services Distinction Award (2012, with continuous renewals in 2014, 2018, 2022);
Chair of the Ontario Health Stroke Unit Task Group (2021-2024);
President of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre Medical Staff Association (2018).

Dr. Jin has published original research on the use of robotics in the assessment of stroke and other neurological disorders, the role of maternal-fetal programming in determining susceptibility to ischemic stroke, and the role of spreading depolarization as a mediator of stroke injury. He continues to be actively involved in clinical stroke research, and is a writing group contributor to the development of the Canadian Stroke Best Practice Recommendations guidelines.
