Dr. Sanfilippo received a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Life Sciences in 1976 and an MD in 1981, both at Queen’s University. He undertook training in Internal Medicine receiving his Royal College Fellowship in 1985 and certification in Cardiology in 1987. He went on to do a postgraduate research fellowship in Echocardiography at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital returning to Queen’s in 1989. He is now a Professor of Medicine and Cardiology with clinical appointments at both Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospitals and directs the Echocardiography Laboratories at both locations.
Dr. Sanfilippo’s major clinical interest has been in Echocardiography. He has published numerous articles, including research in echocardiography, valvular heart disease and cardiac disease in women. He is past president of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography, and primary author of Canadian Consensus documents regarding standards of practice for Echocardiography. He has worked on a number of Quality Improvement initiatives building on that work, including the Accreditation Canada Echocardiography Quality Improvement initiative, where he serves as primary advisor and Chair of the Echocardiography Accreditation and Quality Improvement Panel.
He has also been involved in medical education and administration. He has held numerous administrative positions at Queen’s and Kingston Health Science Centre. He recently completed three terms as Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education and has been appointed as Senior Advisor, Educational Innovation and Expansion. He has won numerous awards for teaching and leadership, including the Principals Award for Leadership in Medical Education, the Connell Award for Medical Education and the Queen’s University Distinguished Service Award.
He is the author of “The Doctors We Need: Imaging a New Path for Physician Recruitment, Training and Support” (Sutherland House).
