Dr. Tanveer E. Towheed graduated in medicine from Queen's University in 1989. He completed a two year research fellowship in the epidemiology of the rheumatic diseases at the University of Maryland under the supervision of an internationally renowned academic rheumatologist, Dr. Marc Hochberg.
Dr. Towheed is a Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology) and of Public Health Sciences at Queen's with expertise in systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including Cochrane reviews. His main research interests include the medical management of osteoarthritis and clinical osteoporosis. He is particularly interested in the role of glucosamine in osteoarthritis and in the treatment of hand osteoarthritis.
Dr. Towheed was a member of the Core Expert Panel that developed the 2012 American College of Rheumatology Treatment Recommendations for osteoarthritis of the hand, hip and knee.
