Dr. Vanessa Martelli graduated from McGill University MDCM program in 2014 and was awarded the Holmes Gold Medal. She went on to complete Internal Medicine residency (2017), Respirology residency (2019) and Sleep Medicine fellowship (2020) at the University of Toronto. She completed her MSc in Health Research Methodology with a focus in Health Technology Assessment at McMaster University in 2023, and was the recipient of a McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award. Prior to joining Queen’s University, she maintained an academic Sleep practice at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health based at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, as well as a community General Respirology practice.
Dr. Martelli’s research interests are real world-evidence and health economic evaluation, pertaining to sleep disorders and circadian science. She has experience conducting population-based research using health administrative datasets. For her Master’s thesis, she used data from ICES to measure the prevalence and predictors of obstructive sleep apnea in patients who underwent bariatric surgery, as well as their associated health care utilization and costs. Her current project is funded by an American Academy of Sleep Medicine Focused Projects Grant for Junior Investigators, and seeks to evaluate preference-based health utility instruments in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. Martelli is originally from Montreal and is fluent in French and Italian.
