April 2, 2020 - Dr. Archer's Update on COVID-19 response from the DOM and Medicine Program

COVID-19 update: There are still 46 cases in our region. Per KFL&A Public Health, 39 of the 46 people have traveled abroad recently or have had contact with travelers. In KHSC there has been no increase in cases. There are currently 5 inpatients, 4 on the Medicine service’s COVID-19 ward and 1 in ICU. KHSC lab did 218 tests for COVID-19 this morning and while there were 6 positive tests, all positive tests were from people outside our region. No new tests were positive from local individuals.

Team Medicine: You continue to exceed all my expectations. I am proud of all that you do. This teamwork begins with housekeeping and extends through all support services, to our nurses, managers, admins, secretaries, trainees and faculty. KUDOS!

The great mother, necessity: Necessity is the mother of invention! It is great to see problems that would have been insoluble pre-pandemic are now being rapidly resolved and bureaucratic barriers to collaboration are being eased.

There are 45 patients with COVID-19 in our region.

COVID update: We have confirmed 40 cases of COVID-19 in our region as of today. These cases reflect the results of 800 tests in our region, representing a 5% positive rate. There are currently 2 COVID-19 patients admitted at KGH. Both have been cared for by Medicine and ICU services. There are 3 health care workers in the region who have tested positive for COVID-19 and they are community acquired cases. Contact tracking suggests that no patients were affected related to these cases.

As we move toward the day when there will be more COVID-19 cases in KHSC, I am confident in our people and our preparation. The team, broadly defined, is handling the stress admirably. Admittedly we all have our moments but the altruism and professionalism I have seen on the wards, in the clinics and in the offices is truly impressive. I want to give a special shout out to the medical residents, secretaries and administrative assistants in the Medicine program. We are so proud of your dedicated service. Also to the DOM administrative team-thank you for being truly #awesome.

I remain so impressed with the staff and faculty at KHSC and in the DOM/Medicine program. In less than 2 weeks the hospital has been transformed with new COVI-19 PCR assays, a new COVID-19 Ward and a complete change in patient flow and the use of PPE. We were only able to adapt so quickly because of the calm, altruistic and collegial team work of everyone, from CEOs and Division Chairs, to frontline doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, support services and our trainees.
