Dr. Onofre Moran MD, MSc, PhD, FRCPC is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Division of Respirology) at Queen’s University. He is a medical graduate of the Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi (UASLP), in Mexico. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and a Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in Mexico City. He received the National Award for Excellence in Medical Research in México in 1995. He completed his Respirology Fellowship and a PhD in Health Care and Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Dr. Moran was a Professor at the UASLP from 1994 to 2007, where he created the Master’s in Clinical Epidemiology Program, and later formed the Department of Clinical Epidemiology where he served as Department Head. He spearheaded (and was the Director of) the first Pulmonary Function Laboratory at the UASLP-affiliated University Hospital.

Since joining Queen’s University in 2007, Dr. Moran has participated in the general Respirology clinic, Tuberculosis clinic, and Respirology consult service. He teaches in the Medicine, Internal Medicine Radiology Programs, and in the Respirology Fellowship Program at Queen’s University.

In 2013, Dr. Moran created the Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD) Clinic at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). In 2014, he created the Interstitial Lung Diseases Fellowship at Queen’s University, along with multidisciplinary ILD Rounds with Respirology, Chest Radiology (Drs. Rob Dhillon, Dominque D’Abreo and Marina Pourafkari) and Lung Pathology (Dr. Alexander Boag); the ILD-Rheumatology Rounds with Rheumatology (Dr. Clements-Baker), and the ILD Journal Club at Queen’s University and KHSC.

Dr. Moran and Dr. Ingrid Harle (Palliative Care physician) created the Advanced Dyspnea Clinic at KHSC in 2017; currently run by our Queen’s / KHSC Palliative Care colleagues.

Thanks to a generous donation from Mr. David Pattenden to the ILD program through the Henderson Foundation, the Ruth Pattenden ILD Fellowship was created in 2017 to fund the training of ILD Fellows. The ILD Program originally accepted one Fellow per year and has trained seven ILD specialists thus far. Since 2022, and due to higher demand, the ILD Program now accepts two new ILD Fellows yearly.

In 2019, Dr. Moran initiated the Transbronchial Lung Cryobiopsy (TBLC) Program at KHSC and Queen’s University after training in TBLC with Dr. Venerino Poletti and Dr. Sara Tomasetti in Italy, and Dr. Mordechai Kramer in Israel. This was the first TBLC program successfully established in an [English] academic centre in Canada.

Dr. Moran’s research interest focuses on clinical aspects of interstitial lung diseases. He has created an ILD database that contains demographic, clinical, environmental; functional, radiological, bronchoscopic and laboratorial information using standardized questionnaires on more than 900 patients (May 2023).

He has over 50 publications and over 60 conference presentations. He published the first case series reporting exposure to foam as a novel cause of hypersensitivity pneumonitis; described increased expiratory flows as the earliest manifestation of ILD in pulmonary function tests; and showed fine crackles on chest auscultation as the most useful clinical manifestation on physical exam in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

He has collaborated in several national and multinational clinical trials including HOPE-IPF, INSPIRATION PLUS, SP-IPF, STARLINER, and REBUILD studies.

He has research collaborations in clinical physiology in ILD with Dr. Alberto Neder from Queen’s University, machine learning on chest computed tomography in ILD with Dr. Joshua Reicher from Stanford University, and Palliative Care in ILD with Dr. Meena Kalluri from the University of Alberta.
