Research Interests:
Dr. Elbehairy is a principal investigator at the Respiratory Investigation Unit (RIU) and has a wide-ranging interest in clinical respiratory physiology. Her research primarily focuses on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep disorders, exercise physiology, and the application of advanced pulmonary imaging techniques. The RIU serves as a site for the Canadian Cohort of Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study and participates in sponsored clinical trials.
In collaboration with colleagues, Dr. Elbehairy’s research has successfully uncovered the mechanisms behind exertional dyspnea and exercise intolerance in various respiratory disorders, including COPD, interstitial lung disease, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This research initiative has contributed to the development of novel treatment approaches to alleviate dyspnea. Dr. Elbehairy has an outstanding record of scientific publications, which can be found on Google Scholar and PubMed.
In addition, Dr. Elbehairy's ongoing research also examines the clinical utility of advanced pulmonary imaging techniques for evaluating respiratory symptoms and treatment responses, and how these are associated with both resting and exertional respiratory physiology.
Clinical Service and teaching:
Dr. Elbehairy operates a clinical service specialising in COPD, sleep disorders, and pulmonary rehabilitation at Hotel Dieu and Providence Care Hospitals. In addition to leading a strong clinical research program, she has consistently enhanced her skills as a university educator throughout her academic career.
