Dr. Lawrence Hookey is a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine at Queen’s University. He is Medical Director of the Endoscopy Units at Kingston Heath Sciences Centre and served as Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology from 2016 to 2026.
Dr. Hookey completed his medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland before coming to Queen’s University, where he completed his training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He subsequently undertook a two-year fellowship in clinical research and therapeutic endoscopy in Belgium and France before returning to Queen’s as a faculty member in 2005.
His clinical practice encompasses general gastroenterology, with a particular focus on therapeutic endoscopy and pancreatic and biliary disease. His research interests include optimizing bowel preparation for colonoscopy, quality assurance in endoscopy, and colonoscopy education. He has also received a Clinician Scientist Award in support of this research program.
